Can the Fellow Ode Gen 2 Grind for Espresso?

Published · By the Espresso Shortlist editors · Prices and specs as of that date, from the pages under Sources

Summary

No, and Fellow says so directly: "Ode is not intended for espresso." Its help center explains that the Ode's 64 mm flat burrs and motor "are geared towards drip and immersion coffee brewing." The $599.95 version with SSP MP burrs doesn't change that, since Fellow's own burr chart marks every Ode burr as unsuitable for espresso. Fellow's grinder for espresso is the Opus 2, at $199.95.

What the Ode's burrs are made for

Fellow publishes how fine each Ode burr set grinds and whether it suits espresso.

SSP MP Brew BurrsOde Gen 2 upgrade, $599.95300 microns and upNo

The SSP set costs $200 more and, by Fellow's own figures, doesn't grind finer than the Gen 2 burrs. Fellow pitches it for "high clarity pour overs with lightly roasted coffee" and says its coating "increases the lifespan by up to 5x." All three share the same brew range: pour-over, French press, drip, AeroPress and cold brew.

The Gen 2 adjusts through "11 settings with 31 total steps" and has a 100 g grind capacity.

Opus 2 for espresso

Fellow calls the Opus 2 "perfect for espresso." It uses 48 mm conical burrs and a stepless side dial, and it comes with an espresso dosing cup that fits 54 mm and 58 mm portafilters. It is $199.95 in black or white and $249.95 in the colors paired with maple or walnut.

Fellow's guide to the first shot on its Series 1 espresso machine puts the split in one line: "Opus can grind for espresso, and Ode cannot."
