Will a 54 mm Bottomless Portafilter Fit Your Breville?

Summary

If your machine is a Bambino, Bambino Plus, Barista Express, Express Impress, Barista Pro, Barista Touch or Touch Impress, it takes Breville's 54 mm portafilter, and a bottomless one made for Breville's 54 mm group should lock in. The Dual Boiler and Oracle models use a 58 mm group and need a different one. Among the three 54 mm versions compared below, the machine lists differ more than the fit does, and the clearer difference is whether a basket comes in the box.

Which Breville machines take the 54 mm size

Normcore's size chart puts the Barista Express, Pro and Touch, the Bambino and Bambino Plus, and the Infuser and Duo-Temp Pro in one group, noting that its tools for them "fit standard 54mm portafilters." The Dual Boiler, Dynamic Duo, Oracle and Oracle Touch sit in a separate row marked "commercial 58mm group head."

Crema Coffee Products draws the same line and names two machines that Normcore's chart leaves out, the Barista Express Impress and the Barista Touch Impress, plus Solis machines. Breville's own pages for both Impress models list a "54mm stainless steel portafilter" among the accessories, so the automatic tamping on those machines doesn't change the portafilter size.

A Barista Pro owner may notice that Breville's naked portafilter page, which says it is "compatible with 54mm Breville espresso machines," shows the Bambino, Barista Touch, Express Impress and Touch Impress in its model list but not the Pro. Normcore's chart and Crema's list both name the Pro.

A bottomless portafilter holds a basket; it isn't one. The Normcore and Crema versions come with a 16 to 18 g double basket, which covers the 18 g dose Breville gives for the Barista Express Impress. Breville's page for its $99.95 version doesn't say whether a basket is included, so a buyer who ends up without one would move a single-wall basket over from the machine's original portafilter. Breville ships these machines with both single-wall and dual-wall baskets in 1-cup and 2-cup sizes.
