What Is the Difference Between a Spring, Click, and Impact Tamper?

Published · By the Espresso Shortlist editors · Prices and specs as of that date, from the pages under Sources

Summary

All three use a spring to set how hard the coffee gets pressed, and they differ in how that force arrives. A calibrated spring tamper compresses steadily until the spring's rating is reached, a click tamper adds a sound when you get there, and an impact tamper stores the energy and releases it in one hit. IKAPE sells all three types for about $44 to $50, which makes its range an easy way to compare them.

One maker, several mechanisms

IKAPE's V3 Calibrated tamper uses two springs. The main one is "calibrated at 30 pounds of pressure," and the second one keeps the tamper balanced as you press. It sells for $43.99 in sizes from 49 to 58.35 mm. The V4 Palm keeps the 30 lb spring but gives your hand a larger area to press on, with a support block on the outside that IKAPE says keeps the press from going out of shape as you push. It costs $55.99.

The V5 Click ($45.99 in 51, 53.3 and 58.35 mm) comes with a replaceable 30 lb spring in a three-stage spring system, and IKAPE also lists 15 lb springs for it. IKAPE sells it as a tamper with sound feedback, a "click" once enough pressure has been applied. The V6 Impact works differently. IKAPE calls it a "shock pressure coffee tamper" that "does not use a constant pressure spring," and says the regular-handle version needs only 15 lb of pressing to deliver at least 30. It sells for $49.99.

Normcore's Spring Loaded Tamper V4 takes another route to the same end, with a leveling plate that rests on the basket rim and stops the tamper at the same depth every time.

Tampers that aren't about force

Crema Coffee Products' Tamper & Distributor Combo has no spring at all. One end spreads the coffee and the other tamps it. Its instructions have you tamp once by feel, then set the tamper side's depth to match that tamp. Every size, from 39.25 mm for Flair presses to 58.5 mm, costs $44.00.

Quando Coffee Gear's Happy Tamper ($118) is sold as a handle plus interchangeable base plates, from 45.4 to 58.5 mm and a D-Flat base for the company's Fusion Shot kit, with extra plates at $20. Quando's pages list the base options and an adjustment wrench in the box but don't describe how the tamper sets its force.
