Which IMS Precision Basket Fits a Breville 54 mm Machine, and How Much Coffee Does It Hold?

Summary

IMS makes its B62.5 Competition baskets for Breville's 54 mm group, and it names the Barista Express, Bambino, Pro and Touch as the machines they're for. The two-cup baskets come in four heights, 22, 24, 26 and 28 mm, and IMS publishes a separate capacity range for dark, medium and light roasts at each height. If you dose 18 g, the 26 mm basket is the only one whose range includes 18 g for all three roasts.

What IMS lists for Breville machines

Breville calls these 54 mm machines, and IMS labels the matching baskets B62.5, because the baskets have a 62.5 mm rim, the lip that sits on the portafilter, and a 54 mm internal body, where the coffee goes. IMS pairs them with a 53 to 53.4 mm tamper.

On its 22 mm and 28 mm basket pages, IMS gives the same perforation for both: 583 holes of 0.30 mm across a 44 mm perforated area, "relaminated and recalibrated." IMS's Breville page doesn't mention the Express Impress or Touch Impress, which Breville also sells with 54 mm portafilters, and neither basket page lists machines.

Choosing a height from your dose

IMS measured these ranges with three coffees: an 80/20 blend for dark roast, 100% arabica for medium, and an Ethiopian single origin for light.

BasketHeightDark roastMedium roastLight roast
B62.52TH22E22 mm12 to 14.5 g13 to 15 g14 to 16 g
B62.52TH24E24 mm14 to 17 g15.5 to 18 g17.5 to 20 g
B62.52TH26E26 mm17 to 19.5 g18 to 21 g18 to 20.5 g
B62.52TH28E28 mm18 to 22 g18.5 to 22.5 g20 to 23 g

Take an 18 g dose and read across. In the 24 mm basket it sits at the top of the medium range and above the dark range. In the 28 mm basket it falls below the medium and light ranges. The 26 mm basket fits it for all three roasts. At 16 g the answer moves down a size, since the 24 mm range covers 16 g for dark and medium roasts but not light.

Breville's own machines come with single-wall and dual-wall baskets in 1-cup and 2-cup sizes, and the Barista Express Impress page describes 18 g as the "ideal dose" for its 54 mm portafilter.
