Portafilters, baskets and tamping tools
What Size Tamper Fits Your Espresso Basket, and Do You Need a Spring-Loaded One?
Summary
Buy the tamper for your basket, not for the number on the portafilter. Tampers are usually made slightly smaller than the basket's nominal size or, for 58 mm baskets, slightly larger than 58 mm, so the right answer comes from the tamper maker's fit chart for your machine. A spring-loaded tamper with a leveling plate makes each tamp land level and at the same depth, which helps if uneven tamping is your problem, and does nothing for grind or dose.
Why a 54 mm basket takes a 53.3 mm tamper
A tamper has to press the whole coffee bed without scraping or jamming against the basket wall. That is why the sizes on tampers don't match the sizes on machines. Normcore sells its Spring Loaded Tamper V4 in ten sizes from 39 mm to 58.5 mm, and its size chart maps them to machines like this:
| Machine | Portafilter | Normcore's recommended tamper |
|---|---|---|
| Breville Bambino, Bambino Plus | 54 mm | 53.3 mm |
| Breville Barista Express, Pro, Touch | 54 mm | 53.3 mm |
| Breville Dual Boiler, Oracle | 58 mm | 58.5 mm |
| Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia, E61 machines | 58 mm | 58.5 mm |
Normcore describes the 53.3 mm size as "designed to fit baskets of 54mm diameter." On the 58 mm side, its chart recommends 58.5 mm for every 58 mm machine it lists, and lists no machine for its 58.0 mm tamper. The company also warns that "coffee machine companies occasionally change the build of the group or baskets depending on the models," so an aftermarket basket can change the fit even when the portafilter stays the same.
What the spring actually does
On a plain tamper, you decide how hard to press and keep it level by feel. The V4 changes both. Its leveling plate "rests flat on top of the filter basket rim as you press," and it "stops further travel once it contacts the basket, keeping tamp depth repeatable." The spring sets how much force it takes to get there, and Normcore includes three: 15, 25, and 30 lb, with the 25 lb one installed.
So the tamp ends at the same depth every time, set by the plate, whether you lean on it lightly or hard. That solves tilted tamps. It doesn't solve a basket with too much or too little coffee in it, or a grind that's far off, because those change how much coffee is under the plate before you press.
What the upgrade buys
The V4 sells for $46.99 (regular price $49.99) in every size. The stock tamper that comes with a Bambino or a Gaggia Classic Pro already fits its basket, so the upgrade buys consistency, not fit. For someone whose shots vary and whose bottomless portafilter shows one side of the puck running first, a leveling tamper takes one variable out of the shot. For someone still working out grind size and dose, the variable it removes isn't the one that's moving.
