Should You Get KitchenAid's Semi-Automatic With Grinder or a KF Fully Automatic?

Published · By the Espresso Shortlist editors · Prices and specs as of that date, from the pages under Sources

Summary

KitchenAid's semi-automatic with burr grinder (KES6551) grinds and doses for you, then hands you the tamp, the shot, and the milk. The KF fully automatic models grind and brew on their own, but how much of the milk they handle depends on the model, and on the KF2 you still steam milk in a pitcher. If lattes are the reason for buying, the KF model's milk system tells you more than its recipe count.

What the KES6551 leaves in your hands

KitchenAid's Smart Dosing Technology grinds the amount for one or two shots at the push of a button, from an 8 oz removable hopper. From there the steps are yours. The 58 mm portafilter has recessed spouts so its base is flat, which KitchenAid says makes tamping easier and more stable. A tamper, two single wall baskets, two double wall baskets, and a 12 oz milk pitcher come in the box. Milk is steamed with a multi-angle wand that you position in the pitcher.

The KF models, sorted by milk

KitchenAid's buying guide from August 2026 splits the fully automatic range in two. The compact KF2, KF3, and KF4 have a 60 oz water tank, an 8.8 oz bean hopper, and 5 grind settings. The full-size KF6, KF7, and KF8 have a 74 oz tank, a removable 9.5 oz hopper, 7 grind settings, and metal-clad bodies.

Two models with automatic milk, the KF3 and the KF6, ship without the container that holds the milk.

The KF2 still leaves the milk to you

The KF2's wand pulls air into the milk as it steams, and a toggle on its side sets the foam density. You still fill a pitcher, which is not included, and hold the wand tip under the surface of the milk. For a latte drinker, the morning step at the wand is the same one the KES6551 asks for. KitchenAid also notes that none of the KF2's removable parts are dishwasher safe and that they are rinsed with warm water.
