What Did Terra Kaffe Change Between the TK-01 and the TK-02?

Published · By the Espresso Shortlist editors · Prices and specs as of that date, from the pages under Sources

Summary

The biggest change is drip coffee. The TK-01 makes espresso drinks only, while the TK-02's hybrid brew unit also brews true drip coffee, up to a 28 oz pot. The TK-02 also moves the water tank, waste bin and drip tray to the front, adds app control and software updates, and adjusts the grind by itself for each drink. The two machines are almost the same size, and Terra Kaffe now sells only the TK-02 and the Demi.

Both use a 48 mm burr, draw 1,400 W and leave 5.5 inches under the spout. The TK-01's own FAQ is candid about drip coffee on a super-automatic, explaining a workaround and adding that machines claiming to brew both are just "running the process outlined above." The TK-02 page answers that directly: "TK-02 doesn't imitate drip. It makes it."

The side-clearance row decides some kitchens on its own. A TK-01 slid into a gap between a wall and a stand mixer needs about 7 inches free on each side for door clearance, while the TK-02's tank and bin come out from the front.

Keeping a TK-01 or buying a TK-02

Terra Kaffe's product catalog lists two machines, the Demi from $695 and the TK-02 at $1,795 with a coffee subscription or $1,995 without, and the TK-02 carries a 2-year or 5,000-brew limited warranty. The TK-01 no longer appears among the machines. Its parts page still lists items such as a $79 brew unit, a $66 milk carafe and a $24 water tank, but the brew unit's product page shows "Sold out," and the $15 TK-01 water filter, which Terra Kaffe says to replace every 90 days, shows a back-in-stock notice.
