Which Differences Matter When You Compare Super-Automatic Brands?
Summary
Every super-automatic grinds and brews at the touch of a button, so the brand differences you live with are the milk system, how the machine handles water and cleaning, and whether the model is sold and supported in the US. Milk varies the most, from a pannarello wand you hold in a pitcher to a carafe you store in the fridge. Support varies too, since some of the machines that turn up in searches have no US price on the maker's own site.
Milk, from a wand to a carafe in the fridge
Gaggia shows the range within one brand. The Brera ($499) froths with a pivoting pannarello wand, so you still hold the pitcher. The Magenta Prestige ($899) has an integrated 0.5 L milk carafe that froths automatically and comes off for storage in the refrigerator. De'Longhi prices the same step inside one model name, with the Magnifica Evo at $749.95 with a manual frother and $899.95 with the automatic LatteCrema System.
Cleaning the milk path is where makers compete. Philips calls LatteGo "the fastest to clean milk system," a claim its footnote bases on consumer testing in Germany in 2023 against other one-touch machines. Saeco's Xelsis models pair an external milk carafe with HygieSteam, which Saeco says cleans milk deposits from the steamer. Terra Kaffe's TK-02 froths any milk from a 600 mL carafe.
Water filters and cleaning cycles
Philips and Saeco both sell the AquaClean filter and say it allows up to 5,000 cups without descaling, a figure based on replacing the filter 8 times when the machine asks. Gaggia's Brera runs automatic rinse and descale cycles and takes a Mavea Intenza filter. The TK-02 decides for itself when to run its rinse and deep clean cycles.
Hand washing differs just as much. De'Longhi describes the Magnifica Duo's removable parts as dishwasher safe, while KitchenAid says none of the removable parts on its KF2 are.
Can you buy it and get parts in the US?
Saeco's Xelsis Deluxe and Xelsis Suprema pages ask you to select a country and show no US price, and the Wi-Fi footnote lists only European countries. JURA's US site lists 13 models, from the ENA 4 to the GIGA 10, without prices, and sends buyers to its online shop. Terra Kaffe's current catalog shows the Demi (from $695) and the TK-02 ($1,795 with a coffee subscription, $1,995 without), and the TK-01 is no longer in the machine list. Its parts page remains, though the $79 replacement brew unit shows as sold out.
